How to use this guide

Read the short answer first, then explain the example without reading. Complete the practice task and collect evidence. The 50/40/30/20-question counts follow twice the higher estimates in your table; they are a preparation target, not a guaranteed employer question bank.

Pehle short answer parho, phir example apni zubaan mein samjhao. Practice task complete karke evidence rakho. Answers ratta laganay ke bajaye steps aur reasoning samjho.

Lab requirements: PowerShell on a supported system, appropriate module versions and read access. Windows-specific cmdlets do not exist on every platform. AD queries need an AD lab and module. Example paths and data are placeholders; review scripts before running them.

Learning path and practice schedule

This is a suggested 108-hour topic plan: 28 beginner hours plus 80 additional intermediate hours. At 4–6 hours a day, allow approximately 5–7 study days for the beginner stage and 18–27 study days total for this guided course. These are planning estimates, not promises of independent workplace competence. Repeat stages if the practical checkpoints are weak. Related subjects overlap in the combined plan.

How do you make a script repeatable?

Short interview answer · English

Check current state, avoid duplicate changes, use predictable inputs and handle partial failure.

Why this matters · English explanation

Idempotence means repeated execution converges on the intended state rather than repeating side effects.

Roman Urdu explanation
Script current state check kare aur duplicate changes na banaye. Partial failure handle karo.
Worked context / illustrative example
A reporting task overwrites its intended output rather than appending duplicate records unknowingly.
Your practical task
Explain a repeat-run test.

Evidence to save: your result or diagram, the checks used, one limitation and the next action. Jahan access na ho, table-top answer likho aur usay lab experience mat bolo.

How do you log script activity?

Short interview answer · English

Record useful status, errors, timestamps and outcomes without leaking secrets.

Why this matters · English explanation

Transcripts can capture sensitive content, so choose logging scope and access carefully.

Roman Urdu explanation
Logs mein time aur outcome rakho, secrets nahin. Transcript sensitive output capture kar sakta hai.
Worked context / illustrative example
A batch report records successful and failed lab lookups separately.
Your practical task
Design safe log fields and a failure sample.

Evidence to save: your result or diagram, the checks used, one limitation and the next action. Jahan access na ho, table-top answer likho aur usay lab experience mat bolo.

Question 40 / 40

How would you demonstrate intermediate PowerShell ability?

Short interview answer · English

Build a scoped reporting tool with parameters, object output, validation, error handling and reproducible tests.

Why this matters · English explanation

Explain design decisions and limitations rather than memorising syntax alone.

Roman Urdu explanation
Intermediate demo mein parameters, validation, error handling aur report hon. Design decisions explain karo.
Worked context / illustrative example
A lab inventory tool exports structured data and reports failed queries without hiding them.
Your practical task
Produce a small read-only script and walk through two failure cases.

Evidence to save: your result or diagram, the checks used, one limitation and the next action. Jahan access na ho, table-top answer likho aur usay lab experience mat bolo.

QuestionAnswer prompt
1. What is PowerShell?A command shell and scripting language designed around objects and automation.
2. Windows PowerShell versus PowerShell 7: what is the difference?Windows PowerShell 5.1 and modern PowerShell 7 have different runtimes and compatibility characteristics.
3. What is a cmdlet?A PowerShell command commonly named using a Verb-Noun pattern.
4. How do you discover commands?Use Get-Command with a name, noun or module filter.
5. How do you use Get-Help?Read syntax, parameters and examples; update or use online help where appropriate.
6. What does Get-Member do?It shows the type, properties and methods of pipeline objects.
7. What is the pipeline?A mechanism to pass output objects to subsequent commands.
8. Where-Object versus Select-Object: what is the difference?Where-Object filters rows; Select-Object chooses properties or subsets of objects.
9. How do you sort and count output?Use Sort-Object and Measure-Object on relevant properties or objects.
10. Why should you avoid Format-Table before Export-Csv?Formatting produces display-oriented records instead of preserving the original data objects.
11. What is a variable?A named reference to a value or object.
12. Array versus hashtable: what is the difference? An array stores an ordered collection; a hashtable maps keys to values.
13. How do you use if statements?Evaluate a condition and select a code path.
14. foreach statement versus ForEach-Object: what is the difference? The statement loops over a collection; ForEach-Object processes pipeline input.
15. What is $_ or $PSItem? The current object in many pipeline script blocks.
16. Single quotes versus double quotes: what is the difference?Single-quoted strings are generally literal; double-quoted strings expand variables and expressions.
17. How do you handle file paths safely?Use supported path parameters, quoting, Join-Path and LiteralPath where appropriate.
18. How do you import and export CSV?Import-Csv creates objects from rows; Export-Csv serialises selected objects to CSV.
19. How do you work with JSON?Use ConvertTo-Json and ConvertFrom-Json for supported serialisation and parsing.
20. What is a function?A reusable named block that accepts input and returns results.
21. What are parameters and validation?Parameters define accepted input; validation helps reject unsuitable values early.
22. What is splatting?Passing a collection of parameter values to a command using splat syntax.
23. Terminating versus non-terminating errors: what is the difference?Terminating errors stop the relevant operation; non-terminating errors can allow processing to continue.
24. How do you use try, catch and finally?Try contains work, catch handles terminating errors and finally performs cleanup.
25. What is -ErrorAction used for?Controlling how supported commands handle non-terminating errors.
26. What is -WhatIf?A preview of actions for commands that support the ShouldProcess mechanism.
27. What is execution policy?A PowerShell execution control intended to help avoid unintended script execution.
28. How do you avoid exposing credentials in scripts?Use approved secret storage, managed identities or secure authentication flows and limit output.
